VPN

General information about VPN at the University of Bonn.

What is VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and offers the possibility to establish a secure and encrypted connection over the insecure and public Internet. An existing Internet connection is a prerequisite for setting up a VPN. It is necessary that the protocol is not blocked by the local provider.

In addition to encryption, the client is assigned an official Internet address (IP address) from the address range of the University of Bonn when a VPN connection is established. Furthermore, the VPN connection can only be established after successful authentication with the Uni-ID of the University of Bonn.

After setting up the VPN connection, the client computer functions as if it were connected directly to the university network.

What is VPN needed for?

The establishment of a VPN connection to the VPN servers at the University of Bonn is currently required in the following cases:

  • Use of the WiFi network at the University of Bonn. Information on the WiFi network can be found here.
  • Use of the majority of literature databases and electronic journals (e-media) from the home office or when travelling. Via the VPN connection the VPN client is assigned an IP address from the University of Bonn's address range (131.220.x.x) which authenticates the user for use of the e-media.

Via the VPN connection, the VPN client is assigned an IP address from the University of Bonn (131.220.x.x), which entitles it to use the eMedia.

Note for the students in the dormitories: A VPN connection is already required for the Internet connection in the dormitories. It is therefore not possible to establish a second VPN connection above it, as described on the HRZ pages. Please refer to the Website of the Studentenwerk.  for information on how to use the university services.

  • When employees work from home

If you connect to the network of the University of Bonn via VPN, your computer will receive an IP address from the university network and will thus have access to services that are otherwise reserved for computers of the university. This can be a practical way for employees and students to use these services from home.

Please note that a service may be subject to further restrictions and that VPN is not always sufficient for access.

Setting up VPN under different operating systems

Not all eMedia may be accessed from home or on the road, some are only available for the VPN connection from the WLAN of the University of Bonn. This is controlled with different VPN servers.

The easiest way is to download the client suitable for the respective operating system, install this client and enter one of the two addresses depending on the desired scenario:
