Overview of WiFi Networks

Brief characterization of WiFi networks.

eduroam

Encrypted transmission between access point and user's device.

WiFi adapter must support WPA encryption (better: WPA2).

For authentication, additional supplier software often has to be installed (must support EAP-TTLS/PAP). Some smartphones do not support this process.

eduroam/DFN roaming possible

For licensing reasons, some services/databases cannot be used on campus.

bonnet

Encrypted transmission through obligatory VPN client.

Requires installation of the Cisco AnyConnect or IPsec VPN client.

There is no free VPN client for PDAs (Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Pocket PC).

No eduroam/DFN-Roaming.

gast-bonnet

Unencrypted transmission.

Accounts available only upon request.
