Unfortunately, the instruction manuals are only available in German. If you have problems understanding the German instructions or need English-speaking support, please visit the IT-Helpdesk or contact us via the support hotline or the contact form.

Information on Android 8 "Oreo": We will not explicitly test and support this version. Please use the existing instructions for older versions or alternatively the instructions for Android 9 "Pie".

Information on Android 7 "Nougat": Please follow the instructions for Android 6 – with the exception of some "cosmetic" changes everything works as usual (tested on Nexus 6 with Android 7.0). Unfortunately, Android 7 does not recognize the eduroam configuration tool (see below) yet and shows a corresponding message. Please manually choose the installer for Android 6, which also works under Android 7.

Under the newest version 7.1.1 there seem to be problems with the manual configuration of eduroam profiles. If you encounter such a problem, please delete all manually created eduroam profiles and subsequently configure eduroam with the configuration tool. Afterwards, manual configuration (for eduroam-ukb etc.) should also work again.

Please choose the configuration instructions according to the Android version that is installed on your device. The most frequent user needs (WLAN, e-mail, calendar, contacts) are already covered by the installation of eduroam and exchange account. Therefore, we recommend to use all other configurations only in cases where there is a specific need for them.

For users of older Android versions, we offer some instructions (in German) for Android from version 2.3 in the overview of available documents. However, these are not actively supported or updated anymore due to a lack of test devices.

Important note on data protection

If the option “Back up my data” is activated under “Settings / Backup & reset” on your Android device, the 802.1x credentials (e.g. your eduroam access data with Uni-ID and password) are saved on Google servers. As Google does not state how and under what conditions the data are stored, we must assume that, in the worst case, these data are transmitted and stored resulting in a heightened risk to data privacy.

Set up eduroam

The DFN offers an eduroam configuration tool, that supports Android from version 4.3. Please follow our detailed instructions (in German) to connect to the eduroam WLAN with the help of this tool.

In case you experience problems with the configuration tool or want to configure a non-standard SSID (e.g. eduroam-ukb), you can also install eduroam manually.

Information on the exchange account

The University of Bonn does not use a Microsoft exchange solution, but uses a Microsoft-independent technology (CommuniGate Pro). Nevertheless, similarly to the set up and use of a MAPI account, it is possible to administer e-mails, calendars, and contacts via a smartphone or tablet on the central mail server of the HRZ by setting up an exchange account (if you want to access shared folders, please consider the information given in paragraph 2.2).

Please note: There are different settings for employees of institutes with their own sub-domain (e.g. In this case, please use the respective institute e-mail address (e.g. [Email protection active, please enable JavaScript.]) and not the “[Email protection active, please enable JavaScript.]” address!
