Assigning of OIDs for Institutions

The ObjectIdentifier (OID) is an identifier that is used worldwide, for a unique identification of objects. Every OID is organized hierarchically in a namespace. OIDs are used for

  • X.509 certificates
  • X500 directory services
  • LDAP scheme for attributes and classes
  • In conjunction with SNMP

 

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has assigned the Private Enterprise Number (PEN) 12718 to the University of Bonn. The IANA assigns only one Private Enterprise Number to each university. A list of all PENs can be found here.

 

Therefor the complete prefix for every OID at the University of Bonn is:

OID assigning at the HRZ

 

The assigning of OIDs at the University of Bonn is performed by the HRZ. Here the assigning follows the principle “first come, first serve”.
