Computer Workplaces

Despite the increasing number of mobile workplaces, the computer workstations (ÖCAPs) set up in the HRZ are an important contact point for many students. There are about 25 PC workstations. The workstations are equipped with Dell PCs (Core2 Duo E8500, 4 GB DDR2, passively cooled NVidia NVS290 and an energy-efficient power supply).

The "Öffentliche Computer Arbeitsplätze (ÖCAP)", in englisch: the Public Computer Workstations of the HRZ have been equipped with Windows 7 since January 2012. A special feature, which is part of the attractiveness, is on the one hand the consistent use of the central services, which make it possible to switch from one PC to the next, and on the other hand the connection with a fast 100Mbit network access to the Internet. The automatic comparison with a standard package deletes all "traces" of the user after logging out, so that data security is given the highest possible priority.

General Information

A Uni-ID, which is required for access to the Internet workstations, can be applied for at the HRZ of the University of Bonn (user applications).

The Internet workstations set up in the HRZ are available Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 21:30. The HRZ consultation is open from 9:00 to 18:00. Please note the user regulations for the workplaces.

Note: Since the energy-saving functions of the PCs have been activated, please first press the space bar or press the power button when the screen is dark. Then you can log in with your Uni-ID in the login mask.

The Windows workstations

The Windows workstations run under Windows 7 Enterprise and are updated at irregular intervals to current software versions. For example, they are currently installed:

  •     OpenOffice
  •     MS Office
  •     Firefox
  •     SPSS
  •     Seamonkey (as web editor)
  •     and much more

The Windows workstations are connected to the file service infrastructure "FSI", so that every user has his personal storage space available for his data, which can be accessed e.g. via sFTP from home. So that the connection to the drive U: of the FSI can also be set up, each user is asked again for his password after logging in with his Uni ID. No wonder: You enter your password (hidden) into an Internet Explorer window when prompted to do so. Without entering the password again, a connection to the FSI is not possible and the workstations cannot then be used with permanent storage. Data storage is then only possible e.g. via USB sticks.

When saving, the default setting for saving data in the "Documents" library in the "HOMES" area of the U drive (of the FSI) is now found - due to the changeover to Windows 7.

For a permanent storage each user has to provide himself (preferably on drive U or a USB stick), since the computers are installed each time with each logout again. During the logon period, additional temporary space (e.g. on drive D:/) can be used, which is automatically deleted after a session has ended ("logoff"). Floppy disk drives are not available.

The login is done via a pGina module, so that a Uni-ID is required. This means that all students can work on these PCs. The service must be activated for employees and guests. If you have any questions, please contact the InfoPoint.

As a "computer administrator", you work with all possibilities on the workstations - after logging off, our installation system will restore the entire computer to its original state so that no data traces are left from you.

Programs that you additionally install yourself or data that are not stored in your home directory (on drive T: or under "My Documents") will be lost when you log off. Of course there is a connection to the printing system of the university.

Note: Even if you can edit and save the old files with the new packages, you should avoid changing the versions of Office packages several times. If possible, work at home with the same program versions.
