eLecture - Opencast

The university offers the Opencast service for electronic support of studies and teaching, with which lectures, seminars and presentations can be recorded. These can then be made available to students online afterwards, so that learning content can be viewed again and deepened at any time.

For whom?

Lecturers

The service is available to all lecturers at the university.

What for?

Lecturers

    • to make the content available only as a stream without a download
    • record lectures with camera and/or presentation (Opencast Studio)
    • upload existing recordings and edit them if necessary
    • limit the user group to eCampus course members only
    • Play back camera and presentation synchronously in the player

    How does it work?

There are 50 recording sets available for creating eLectures and conducting web conferences, most of which have been permanently installed in lecture halls. This is equipment that lecturers can connect to their own notebook (e.g. via USB) and use with the corresponding application (e.g. Opencast Studio, Zoom) for recordings or online meetings.

After recording lectures, seminars or conferences, teachers can edit the video material again. The tools for recording (Opencast Studio) and editing (Online Editor) have the advantage that they are clear and easy to use. However, this limits the range of functions. For example, with Opencast Studio you can only cut out the beginning and end and have no further option for subsequent editing. With the Online Editor, you can only cut out sections of uploaded videos, but not exchange slides.

The videos can then be stored on the University of Bonn's media server. However, we recommend saving all recordings to a separate location and making them available on Opencast as required.
