Dies academicus at the HRZ: Tour through Marvin's machine room Dies academicus at the HRZ: Tour through Marvin's machine room

In the context of this year's Dies academicus (14 May, 2025), visitors have once again the opportunity to take look behind the scenes and behind usually closed doors of the ultramodern supercomputer "Marvin". With its impressive computing power, the supercomputer, which recently celebrated its first birthday, belongs to the TOP500 of fasted computers in the world and is available to all university members.

The tour through the machine room allows participants to learn more about technical details and the diverse implementation possibilities of "Marvin". Those who are interested can get an on-site picture of the impressive technology and can inquire about any questions with the related experts.

The HPC team of the University IT and Data Center offers two 30-minute tours through the machine room of the new supercomputer "Marvin":

Start tour group 1: 01:00 p.m.

Start tour group 2: 01:30 p.m.

Please note that the maximum number of participants is limited to 15 participants per group. Unfortunately, participation without prior registration and confirmation is not possible. If you are interested in participating, please contact the HPC team via e-mail at training@hpc.uni-bonn.de until Monday, 13th of May 2025.

You will receive all further information (meeting point etc.) together with the registration confirmation via e-mail.

Technical insights and infrastructure

The high-performance computer ‘Marvin’ has around 300 computing nodes, some of which are equipped with powerful NVIDIA GPUs and some with Intel CPUs. The University Computer and Data Centre (HRZ) of the University of Bonn is responsible for the installation and operation. However, due to the enormous size and special requirements of the system, ‘Marvin’ was housed in the premises of the Institute for Numerical Simulation (INS), as the HRZ itself did not have sufficient space. The HPC/A-Lab is the central contact point for HPC-related research projects.

Interdisciplinary use and access

‘Marvin’ is an essential part of the University of Bonn's research infrastructure and is already being used intensively by numerous departments. Researchers from all disciplines and students have the opportunity to apply for access to ‘Marvin’ and use its computing power for their scientific projects.

Would you also like to apply for access to HPC utilisation?
