Supercomputer Marvin turns 1 year old Supercomputer Marvin turns 1 year old

On 25 March 2025, we will celebrate the first birthday of our supercomputer ‘Marvin’. To mark this special day, the HPC team at the HRZ is organising an event together with the HPC/A Lab and TRA Modelling.

The programme consists of a welcome by Prof. Maren Bennewitz, Vice-Rector for Digitalisation and Information Management and head of the HPC/A-Lab, followed by an invited presentation by the legend of parallel programming, Timothy Mattson: "The hitchhiker's guide to the future of HPC - processors, people and programming", as well as other exciting scientific talks, presentations, a competition, public voting and an award ceremony. A detailed programme can be found here.

The ‘Most Interesting Results’ competition is now open: you can submit a summary describing the most interesting scientific project or result you have realised or achieved with Marvin and win great prizes.

How to take part in the ‘Most Interesting Results Competition’

Submit an abstract here.

Seven finalists will be selected by a jury to present their project. An audience vote will then determine the winners on site. The jury consists of scientific members of the HPC Advisory Board and employees of the HPC/HRZ.

What prizes can you win?

1st prize:
One week of premium HPC support! A member of our support team will come to your group for a whole week, help you install the HPC software, check your code and job scripts or hold training sessions, depending on what you need!
3x Fair Share on Marvin for 6 months for your research group

2nd prize:
2x Fair Share on Marvin for 6 months for your research group

3rd prize:
1.5x fair share on Marvin for 6 months for your research group

Technical insights and infrastructure

The high-performance computer ‘Marvin’ has around 300 computing nodes, some of which are equipped with powerful NVIDIA GPUs and some with Intel CPUs. The University Computer and Data Centre (HRZ) of the University of Bonn is responsible for the installation and operation. However, due to the enormous size and special requirements of the system, ‘Marvin’ was housed in the premises of the Institute for Numerical Simulation (INS), as the HRZ itself did not have sufficient space. The HPC/A-Lab is the central contact point for HPC-related research projects.

Interdisciplinary use and access

‘Marvin’ is an essential part of the University of Bonn's research infrastructure and is already being used intensively by numerous departments. Researchers from all disciplines and students have the opportunity to apply for access to ‘Marvin’ and use its computing power for their scientific projects.

Would you also like to apply for access to HPC utilisation?
