Changes to the VPN for IPSec access Changes to the VPN for IPSec access

General note: If you have previously used the AnyConnect client or the OpenConnect client to establish a connection to the VPN server (unibn-vpn.uni-bonn.de and unibn-wlan.uni-bonn.de) of the University of Bonn, you will not be affected by the following changes.

What will change?

For security reasons, the central VPN servers for IPSec access will be switched off on 28 February 2025. These are the VPN servers with the IP addresses 131.220.224.201 (vpn1-rz.rhrz.uni-bonn.de) and 131.220.224.202 (vpn3-rz.rhrz.uni-bonn.de). We will notify users of these accesses whether their VPN connection is affected, as they must switch to access using the AnyConnect client in good time, otherwise they will no longer be able to establish a VPN connection to the intranet. If you need support with the installation of the AnyConnect client, you can contact the HRZ IT helpdesk or your institute admin.

Why is it being switched off?

The manufacturer no longer provides software updates and security updates for the VPN servers mentioned.
and security updates are no longer provided by the manufacturer. In addition, there is no
replacement and support for the hardware used.
