Second HPC community event for the anniversary of Marvin Second HPC community event for the anniversary of Marvin

For the second time the HPC-Team of the University IT and Data Center, the HPC/A Lab as well as TRA Modelling organised a communal event to offer HPC users a forum for exchange and to share the projects that have already been realised with Marvin.

A workshop and a hackathon, administered by Dr. Georg Hager (University of Erlangen) were the starting point and allowed the participants to expand and share their knowledge on working with HPC.

However, the highlight was the community event on 19.03.2026: With a talk from Dr. Georg Hager, a subsequent poster session and short talks an exciting exchange among HPC users took place. Of course, a birthday cakes could not be missed to adequately celebrate the community event.

Technical insights and infrastructure

The high-performance computer ‘Marvin’ has around 300 computing nodes, some of which are equipped with powerful NVIDIA GPUs and some with Intel CPUs. The University Computer and Data Centre (HRZ) of the University of Bonn is responsible for the installation and operation. However, due to the enormous size and special requirements of the system, ‘Marvin’ was housed in the premises of the Institute for Numerical Simulation (INS), as the HRZ itself did not have sufficient space. The HPC/A-Lab is the central contact point for HPC-related research projects.

Interdisciplinary use and access

‘Marvin’ is an essential part of the University of Bonn's research infrastructure and is already being used intensively by numerous departments. Researchers from all disciplines and students have the opportunity to apply for access to ‘Marvin’ and use its computing power for their scientific projects.

Would you also like to apply for access to HPC utilisation?
