HPC community event celebrating the second anniversary of Marvin HPC community event celebrating the second anniversary of Marvin

Marking the second anniversary of the Marvin high-performance computer, the HPC team at the University Computing Centre (HRZ), the HPC/A Lab and TRA Modelling are once again hosting a community event to present and celebrate the work done with Marvin to date.

On 17 and 18 March, a workshop and hackathon on working with HPC will be held by Dr Georg Hager (University of Erlangen) and will be open to all researchers at the University of Bonn.

The highlight of the anniversary event will be Marvin's birthday party on March 19, 2026, at the Campus Poppelsdorf, with a guest lecture by Dr. Georg Hager (University of Erlangen). In addition, all participants are invited to submit a poster or give a short presentation to showcase their Marvin-related research, workflows, methods, or results.

Further information regarding the workshops, the celebration and details on and the presentations can be found on the HPC website.

Technical insights and infrastructure

The high-performance computer ‘Marvin’ has around 300 computing nodes, some of which are equipped with powerful NVIDIA GPUs and some with Intel CPUs. The University Computer and Data Centre (HRZ) of the University of Bonn is responsible for the installation and operation. However, due to the enormous size and special requirements of the system, ‘Marvin’ was housed in the premises of the Institute for Numerical Simulation (INS), as the HRZ itself did not have sufficient space. The HPC/A-Lab is the central contact point for HPC-related research projects.

Interdisciplinary use and access

‘Marvin’ is an essential part of the University of Bonn's research infrastructure and is already being used intensively by numerous departments. Researchers from all disciplines and students have the opportunity to apply for access to ‘Marvin’ and use its computing power for their scientific projects.
