Successful Girls' Day 2026 at the HRZ
At this year’s Girls’ Day at the University IT and Data Center, we once again welcomed eight curious students who actively immersed themselves in the world of the HRZ during an exciting scavenger hunt. At various stations, they solved tricky puzzles and independently set up a working network. Working in teams of two, the participants discovered how smartphones and laptops communicate with each other at home, which components make up a computer, and how to create secure passwords. Stations such as the 3D printer, workstation systems, and network communication offered diverse insights into the day-to-day work of the HRZ. At the same time, the girls collected important solution words in an interactive quiz, which they later needed to decrypt four computers. Subsequent to atour of our server room and a well-deserved pizza break, it was time for the hands-on part: The participants wired up four Raspberry Pis, connected them to monitors, keyboards, and switches, and established a working network connection. Once activated with the master password, they were able to test the newly set up workstations in a computer game, cooperatively as well as competitively.

Second HPC community event for the anniversary of Marvin
For the second time the HPC-Team of the University IT and Data Center, the HPC/A Lab as well as TRA Modelling organised a communal event to offer HPC users a forum for exchange and to share the projects that have already been realised with Marvin.  A workshop and a hackathon, administered by Dr. Georg Hager (University of Erlangen) were the starting point and allowed the participants to expand and share their knowledge on working with HPC. However, the highlight was the community event on 19.03.2026: With a talk from Dr. Georg Hager, a subsequent poster session and short talks an exciting exchange among HPC users took place. Of course, a birthday cakes could not be missed to adequately celebrate the community event.

HPC community event celebrating the second anniversary of Marvin
Marking the second anniversary of the Marvin high-performance computer, the HPC team at the University Computing Centre (HRZ), the HPC/A Lab and TRA Modelling are once again hosting a community event to present and celebrate the work done with Marvin to date. On 17 and 18 March, a workshop and hackathon on working with HPC will be held by Dr Georg Hager (University of Erlangen) and will be open to all researchers at the University of Bonn. The highlight of the anniversary event will be Marvin's birthday party on March 19, 2026, at the Campus Poppelsdorf, with a guest lecture by Dr. Georg Hager (University of Erlangen). In addition, all participants are invited to submit a poster or give a short presentation to showcase their Marvin-related research, workflows, methods, or results. Further information regarding the workshops, the celebration and details on and the presentations can be found on the HPC website.
New opening times and discontinuation of the poster service
The university's cost-cutting measures also necessitate the reduction of services at the University IT and Data Center. This affects the plot service and the helpdesk. Poster printing will be discontinued on 31 January. Plot orders received by this date will still be processed. The opening hours of the IT helpdesk will be reduced. From 1 February, the helpdesk will be open Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and on Fridays until 4 p.m. This includes telephone availability.
