Multi-factor authentication is coming1
IT security needs more than one factor - multi-factor authentication is coming
Multi-factor authentication (MFA), which is already familiar from everyday life and is used as a general security standard, e.g. for online banking, is now being gradually introduced at the University of Bonn.
In order to find out what is behind MFA and in what form it is carried out at the University of Bonn, we asked the team of experts in the University IT and Data Center, which designs and coordinates the introduction of MFA at the university, five questions:
New features in Zoom X2
With the move from Zoom to "Zoom X", the University of Bonn has kept its promise to find a data protection alternative to the Zoom US servers. Since March 2023, all university members have not only been able to benefit from a significantly improved data protection basis, but also from constantly new features.
Two new features will be activated on September 1, 2023: the Zoom whiteboard and direct messages (during a Zoom meeting).
The whiteboard is the new digital canvas in Zoom X, on which ideas and results can be collected and recorded together. With the whiteboard, meetings can now be designed collaboratively and interactively. Whiteboards can be prepared before the meeting and shared after the meeting.
You can find out which settings have to be made in your Zoom account for the Zoom X whiteboard in the instructions in the HRZ documentation (accessible only in BONNET or via VPN): Whiteboard

bonndata - the new home for research data4
The Open Access Service Center now offers researchers of the university a new repository for the publication of research data: bonndata.
bonndata is a general, not subject-specific repository, which is made available to all researchers of the university and complies with the FAIR principles:
F - Findable
A - Accessible
I - Interoperable
R - Reusable
The repository bonndata is based on the software dataverse and can be adapted to specific requirements, both for individual researchers and for entire special research areas, clusters of excellence, institutes, etc., in order to publish the research data in a professional manner. In contrast to bonndata, RADAR, the repository used so far for the publication of research data, is exclusively used for non-public archiving.
Are you curious about bonndata? Feel free to attend the next HRZ Cafe on August 09, 2023 at 1pm and/or the next lecture in the Coffee Lecture series on August 30, 2023 at 12:30pm (via Zoom). A demo of bonndata will take place as part of these events.
All detailed information about bonndata can be found on the service website and in the user guide (Confluence).
For those who would like to try out the system, the Service Agency Research Data also offers a sandbox version.
HRZ IT-Tip: Colourbox Educational5
Looking for images for studies, research and education without Watermarks?
The University of Bonn has taken out a "Colourbox Educational" campus licence, giving university students and staff access to millions of images, illustrations and videos. Students, teaching staff and university employees are each allowed to dowload 30 free pictures per month from Colourbox and use them for research and teaching. These downloads may be used for seminar papers and assignments, course and teaching materials, presentations and lectures.
Our courses in the winter semester 2023/20246
In the HRZ's own course room and online, courses on many IT topics will also be offered to all university members in the upcoming semester.
